How to Prepare Your Kids for a Christmas Photoshoot

A Christmas photoshoot is a wonderful way to capture festive memories with your family, but getting the kids ready can sometimes be a bit challenging. As a local photographer in Greenwich and Blackheath, I know how to make this experience enjoyable and stress-free for everyone involved. Here are some tips to help you prepare your children for a Christmas photoshoot.

1. Plan Outfits in Advance

Choosing outfits ahead of time can help eliminate last-minute stress. Pick comfortable clothing that fits the festive theme—think cosy jumpers, coordinating colours, or even fun Christmas costumes. Make sure the kids try on their outfits before the day of the shoot to ensure everything fits properly and feels comfortable.

2. Set the Scene with Excitement

Talk to your kids about the photoshoot beforehand and make it sound like an exciting adventure. Explain that it’s a special opportunity to have fun and capture beautiful pictures. You can even involve them in planning by letting them choose props or accessories to bring along.

3. Schedule Around Their Routine

Try to schedule the photoshoot at a time when your children are usually in good spirits—after a nap or a meal is ideal, I know its hard but we can try our best ;) This will helps to avoid tiredness or hunger…Keeping the session within their usual routine will make them feel more comfortable and cooperative.

4. Bring Snacks and Toys

Pack some favourite snacks and toys to keep your children happy and entertained during the session. A small snack can be a great way to reward good behaviour, while a beloved toy can provide comfort and coax out genuine smiles.

5. Keep It Short and Sweet

Kids have short attention spans, so my sessions are designed to be fun and dynamic, with various poses and setups to keep them engaged without overwhelming them. Parents often worry too much, so just come and enjoy while I handle the hard work! The session lasts one hour, but we'll likely spend 30-40 minutes taking photos. This is enough time for everyone to have a great experience without feeling rushed. Please be on time to ensure everything runs smoothly and everyone enjoys themselves.

6. Relax and Go with the Flow

Kids can sense stress, so try to stay relaxed and patient throughout the photoshoot. If they get fussy or don’t want to pose, don’t worry—some of the best photos come from candid moments. As a photographer used to working with kids, I will entertain them and ensure they enjoy the session. You don’t need to worry about a thing!

7. Make It Fun

Most importantly, make the experience enjoyable. We can play festive music, use fun props, and encourage silly poses to ensure everyone has a great time. The goal is to capture authentic smiles and laughter that reflect the joy of the season.

By following these tips, you can help make your Christmas photoshoot a memorable and enjoyable experience for your children. I’m here to assist every step of the way, ensuring your family’s festive spirit shines through in each photo.
